The Death of Crucifixion

This Slate article suggests that it was another product of the Roman Empire interfering with Early Christianity. Is it true? I don’t know, I just know (or is hope the right word?) that it’s no longer happening today. People are still hung, tortured and killed in a multitude of ways today. Would our modern society really be as desensitized to crucifixion as we are to other forms of violence and harm today?
